A Chance Encounter

Sean Andersen - ShadeX Owner - has over 30 years experience building a marquee luxury landscape company in Phoenix.

Ben Forsberg - ShadeX CEO - has over 20 years experience in the outdoor living space and manufacturing industry.

The two met via an innocuous email inquiry that quickly led to the conversations, connections, and collaboration that created ShadeX.

Two things quickly became apparent: 1) they would make great partners, and 2) there was a big gap in the louvered roof market between the cheap junk and the out-of-reach luxury brands that both partners wanted to resolve.

Their early conversations and subsequent efforts resulted in a better approach to outdoor living spaces, particularly more attainable luxury louvered roof pergolas.

Fast-forward, and you’ll discover the partnership is as strong as ever and the approach is proving its advantages to clients and partners alike.

We started out with a desire to make outdoor luxury attainable for those who truly want it. With backgrounds in manufacturing and construction, we knew there had to be a way to make a high-quality product that more people could access and afford. The best way to do that was to start with what clients want, then create a different model for how to get it to them. We realized that certain levels of quality have a cost. Nothing luxurious is ever cheap. But, as we looked around, we saw that the existing louvered pergola model was bloated, with dozens of manufacturers rushing to market with over-complicated and hard-to-install products. Problem #1 - Most manufacturers can’t translate their cool designs into real-world installations. Problem #2 - Typical manufacturers rely on distributors and dealers to sell their product, driving up cost and reducing accountability. We take a different approach. First, we created ShadeX to adapt to almost any real-life, on-site requirement. Second, we’ve partnered with installation pros who are part of our network. We support them well and share both the profits and the costs, ultimately driving down the end-user price, while offering a better product and a better experience.

We’ve just moved into a new production facility in Phoenix, Arizona. We support activities all over the state and have recently launched markets in Kansas City and Minneapolis. We’re working with regional partners to train teams and install the products we make in Phoenix, all over the western United States. Our product line has developed from one product to a complete line of outdoor living space products. Our flagship product - The APEX - is Made in America and exceeds industry standards. All that to say, we’re off and running with ongoing innovation, excellence, and creativity as our fuel for the future.

What happens from here depends in large part on people like you. We’re planning controlled growth so we can oversee the quality and customer satisfaction among our partner networks. Our goal is to have six new markets opening each year, supported by localized fabrication and expert teams. All the while, we’re working hard to live into our values. We say things like “Always be innovating” because we’re tireless when it comes to improving our products and providing better methods and solutions. We teach our teams not to ask “what works”, but instead to live by “What’s best?”. We’ve found that we’re scratching an itch, so we’ll keep at it.
